Picture
“Nothing should be done without a purpose.”
Marcus Aurelius

“My purpose is to help you tap into your character strengths and resources - your best self - as you change limiting beliefs, alter unhealthy negative emotions, and evolve new behaviours.”
Joseph Plowman, M.Sc. (Applied Psychology)
Just Imagine It

Imagine being asked...

...to close your eyes...

...as you listen to my words...

...then you start to feel more and more relaxed...

...and then you start to focus...

...on how your negative thoughts...

...are not facts...

...and then you start to change...

...your thinking...

...with my guidance...

...and then you start to feel...

...better...

...and behave...

...in new ways...

...that help your life!

Welcome to hypnosis and the power of imagination!

Services

I offer hypnotherapy and coaching psychology services via one-to-one (face-to-face), group, and Zoom/Skype formats.

I specialise in dealing with mild to moderate depression (severe depression is best handled via your GP and with referral for therapy that is longer than brief hypnotherapy - medication may also be required to support you while you seek therapy), anxiety, phobias, smoking cessation, unwanted habits, sexual and identity issues, and also a variety of coaching matters including sports performance, motivation, values clarification, and the enhancement of general well-being and purpose.

The fee for Phenomenal Hypnotherapy and Coaching can be found on the Testimonials and Fees page above.

What I do

Phenomenal Psychology, relating to phenomenology (the study of human experience), deals with excellent human experiences and empirical changes in your experience. The word 'phenomenal' relates both to excellence and human experience. We will pursue this via a number of empirical and experiential methods, including:

1) Hypnotherapy and Mindfulness approaches
2) Cognitive Therapy approaches
3) Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) approaches
4) Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
5) Applied Positive Psychology (accessing and using character strengths)
6) Coaching Psychology (e.g., Life and Peak Performance Coaching)
7) Hypnodynamic Techniques (restructuring past experiences, if needed, via hypnotic reprocessing)

Definitions

Eudaimonia (pronounced 'You-Day-Monia'): The science and philosophy of discovering and accessing your strengths; attaining greater wellbeing; and growing towards wisdom. We come to know this condition and state of being via our human experience of a well-lived life. Because it is about both experience and excellence, I refer to it as phenomenal.

Phenomenal: In philosophy and the psychology of consciousness, this relates to the structure of human experience. In terms of behavioural outcomes and positive psychology, phenomenal relates to a judgement and evaluation of excellence. As a result, Phenomenal Psychology seeks to enhance the quality of both your experience and your behaviour.

Psychology: The scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. Applied psychology utilises this knowledge base and applies it to various life domains, such as work, relationships, personal change and development, school, performance and goal achievement, and many more. Psychology is distinct from psychiatry in that psychology has a scientific basis and does not seek to pathologise your experience. Phenomenal Psychology, as a result, looks for what you are doing well while transforming what isn't working. It does not label, is non-judgemental of you as a person, and seeks to help you achieve your own goals and aims for self development.

Hypnosis: A natural and safe state of mind and body, characterised by focused attention, a sense of openness to change and new experiences, relaxation, and a greater access to unconscious resources and potential. The word 'trance' (if used) simply refers to this focused attention on helpful ideas. You will be aware of the session; will remember the session; and will at all times feel safe and secure. Research and expert opinion agree that a person cannot be made to go against their moral values, and that hypnosis can therefore safely amplify therapeutic and coaching goals. Cultures have long made use of trance experiences in order to awaken their human resources. You will therefore be trained to experience this and the wisdom it has to offer. You might call it a process of 'trance-formation.'

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy: A modern form of hypnotherapy that combines the evidence-base of cognitive behavioural therapy with hypnosis. Research has found that this combination is more effective than CBT alone for various issues, such as weight-loss.
